Level 4 Creative Enterprise

The Conservation and Education Centre at the former Bristol Zoo Gardens site remains open to students.

You will have private access to the zoo grounds during lectures, to carry out your observations and data collection, but as more animals are moved, this will gradually be carried out at the Bristol Zoo Project. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

NEW FOR SEPTEMBER 2027

This one year course is built for those aged over 18 years of age, and is aimed at you, if you want more than just making work - you want to build something of your own. Whether you’re aiming to freelance, launch a brand, or start a creative business, you’ll gain the skills, mindset, and confidence to make it happen.

You will:

  • Shape your own creative direction and develop a practice that’s uniquely yours
  • Build a strong personal brand and professional identity
  • Learn how to start, run, and grow a creative business
  • Connect with other creatives and start building your network
  • Work on real-world projects that reflect the industry

Along the way, you’ll develop essential skills in:

Ready to turn your creativity into a business? In this unit, you’ll develop the enterprise skills you need to launch your own creative venture. You’ll explore how to position and brand yourself in a competitive industry, while gaining a clear understanding of the policies and professional standards that shape your chosen sector. You’ll learn how creative businesses operate, from building sustainable business models to managing projects, understanding copyright, planning finances, and pitching your ideas with confidence. Alongside this, you’ll develop practical skills in marketing, social media, and audience engagement, as well as essential knowledge of health and safety and relevant legislation. This unit runs alongside your creative development, helping you connect your ideas to real-world opportunities. Together with the next stages of the course, it lays the foundation for building and growing your own enterprise. The Creative Practitioner

This unit gives you the time, space, and support to define what you want your creative future to look like. You’ll explore your ideas in depth, developing your own creative direction while beginning to shape your enterprise ambitions. As you build your concept, you’ll position your work within a specific area of contemporary practice, understanding where it fits, who it’s for, and how it stands out. You’ll research your chosen field, analyse competitors, and learn how to differentiate yourself in a competitive market. At the same time, you’ll start building real industry connections by developing your networking skills and creating a database of contacts as you begin to engage with the professional world. This unit is a key step towards your final creative enterprise business plan. It challenges you to reflect on your strengths, clarify your goals, and develop the professional skills needed to move forward in your chosen industry. By the end, you’ll have a clear sense of your creative direction and enterprise ambitions. What you’ll do: • Define and develop your creative idea or product • Research and test your concepts in real-world contexts • Explore your creative practice through experimentation and investigation • Analyse competitors and understand your place in the market • Build relationships and grow your professional network • Engage with industry through mentoring or placement opportunities This unit is self-directed, giving you the freedom to shape your own path while being supported to think creatively, take risks, and innovate.

The Creative Enterprise

In this unit, you’ll develop, refine, and present a fully realised creative enterprise business plan. Building on your earlier work, you’ll take ownership of your professional development by carrying out an independent feasibility study that informs and strengthens your final proposal. Your business plan will outline every key aspect of your venture, from budgeting and legal considerations to branding, marketing, and health and safety. At the same time, you’ll position your work within the wider creative industries, showing where your practice fits and how it can succeed. By the end of the unit, you’ll have experienced the process of professional business planning at a level aligned with industry practice. You’ll be able to apply what you’ve learned to future projects with confidence, clarity, and a strong understanding of how to operate in your chosen field. • Develop a detailed and sustainable creative business plan • Carry out a feasibility study to test and support your ideas • Define your brand, audience, and market position • Plan budgets, funding, and financial strategies • Address legal, ethical, and health and safety requirements • Present your ideas clearly and professionally Throughout the unit, you’ll take part in workshops, planning sessions, presentations, and industry-focused activities. Entry Requirements Level 3 qualifications and GCSE English and Maths grade C or 4. SGS recognises the individual nature of each application and our typical offer should be viewed as a guide. We will consider evidence of your relevant personal, professional or educational experience where it demonstrates an ability and potential to succeed on the course.
