The Bristol School of Art proudly celebrates the success of our first GaneTrust Travel Scholarships, which awarded three talented students the opportunity to deepen their creative practice through travel and immersive learning experiences. Thanks to the generous support of the Gane Trust, three Higher Education students from Levels 5 and 6 in the Fine Art and Contemporary Arts Practice programs were able to embark on inspiring projects that reflect their unique artistic visions and passions. The scholarship, awarded through a competitive selection process, encouraged students to submit detailed project proposals, aiming to fund travel-based learning that would enhance their practice.

Our first-ever recipients for the 2023-24 academic year are:
Each student embarked on an enriching journey, documenting their experiences to share with their peers and the larger art community. As we prepare to launch a series of social media posts, each winner will be featured in individual Instagram posts with images from their respective travel projects and highlights from the presentations they gave to current students. Here's a glimpse into each of their unique journeys:
Karen Painter, one of our inaugural Gane Trust Travel Scholars, traveled to Cerdeira, Portugal, to join a specialized ceramics art residency. Immersed in Cerdeira’s natural beauty and rich artistic community, she experimented with local clay, exploring new textures and techniques that expanded her approach to ceramics. Karen described her experience as a transformative step in her practice, noting, “quote from Karen’s file.”
Another scholarship recipient, Comê Rischman, chose to visit the Isle of Wight, where he was granted insight into the world of enameling and public art. He spent time at A.J. Wells, a company renowned for its work with London Underground signage, and also engaged with local artists, sketching landscapes and developing ideas for future enameling projects. His time on the Isle of Wight inspired fresh creative directions and offered valuable connections within the enameling and arts community.
Saskia Leljak participated in an intensive jewelry masterclass in Lisbon, where she learned from experts in design and material techniques that will contribute to her evolving practice in jewelry making. Further documentation of her experience is forthcoming and promises to provide insights into her artistic growth during this immersive opportunity.

Their stories highlighted the power of travel and focused residencies in developing artistic vision, technique, and creative confidence.
